WTF…it’s not what you think
Bega Valley used its Waste App to educate the community on its new FOGO service. Council then invested in creating sophisticated forms to make it easier for residents to conveniently report issues, change bin sizes and service types, and so much more (simultaneously reducing calls to Council!). Most recently in 2021, Council launched an innovative digital waste voucher solution through its Waste App.

The greatest challenge for this project was that Council did not have a complete set of addresses with associated waste collection information. We worked with Council and the contractor to build this and altered the solution design at our end to enable Council to use the data they did have.
We also developed a pop up for the calendar that would inform residents without a collection service to contact council if they believed they were incorrectly classified as a “no bin” property in the app.
Value
The waste app paid for itself in one year. By introducing the app, Council was able to cease printing and posting its annual calendar to every resident.
The amazing cost saving story was replicated with the introduction of its digital waste vouchers solution. Not only will Council be saving money from this initiative in year 2, but the project will also deliver invaluable reports with data on the use of vouchers. Council has previously not had visuals on which members of the community were using the vouchers and when.
Each year, the waste app enables Bega Valley to avoid printing and posting approximately 50,000 pieces of paper. A significant environmental achievement.
